Book Review - - Breathe by Elena Dillon

16153090
Synopsis

Jasmine’s life wasn't normal for a 16 year old girl. It hadn't been normal since the murder of her older sister, Daisy, two years ago. Her life had been changed forever. The monster that murdered Daisy was never caught. That was the reason her family decided to move away from their hometown in Southern California, to start over. Hopefully in a place where the last name Rourke wouldn’t bring on staring or judgment or morbid curiosity.

In Lafayette, Louisiana things are quite a bit different but in a good way. Good manners, Cajun accents and a whole lot of Southern Hospitality all make her think things are going in the right direction. On top of that the most gorgeous boy she has ever met is interested in her. Her new friends are better than she could have hoped for even if she is worried about what they might think when they find out who she is. Life would be perfect if odd things didn't keep happening. Creepy phone calls, texts, and flowers in her locker start adding up quickly to something terrifying. Could the Monster have followed them to Lafayette? Was he coming after her this time? Maybe she was just worrying unnecessarily…or not.

5 Stars

Breathe by Elena Dillon is the first book in the breather series but it is a stand alone novel. It is a high school romance but it is also a suspenseful thriller. I'm always a little hesitant going into high school romance stories, the characters can be very juvenile because they're high school students but sometimes they are mature and wise beyond their years. This book is about a young girl named Jasmine who had to grow up way too fast after her older sister was murdered. Her attitude toward life and high school drama were mature, she'd been through such a horrible tragedy that she had no time for typical childish things. She had also never been able to date so after her family picks up and moves to Lafayette she, literally, falls into the arms of the high school quarterback. Easton is a total dream, if there had been boys like that at my high school I would have thrown myself at them! He's gorgeous, charming, polite and just an absolute wonderful guy. He is also devoted and hadn't dated much because he was just searching for the right girl. If all southern guys are that polite and charming then I might have to move!

Their romance is an intense whirlwind and they are just adorable together but sometimes things are just too good to be true. Jasmine had been getting mysterious texts, phone calls and gifts. She dismisses them as pranks but there is something more to them. You'll have to read the book to find out what! I loved the mystery/suspense plot of this book, i was literally on the edge of my seat. About halfway through the book changes from sweet romance to hardcore suspense and I knew I wouldn't be putting this book down until I finished. Of course Jasmine does some stupid things but when I really thought about it, I'm not sure if I would have done anything differently. She had hard choices to make and did what she thought was right, isn't that all we can ever do? Easton is not a man to be messed with if he is worried about his girl, he will do anything to help her, no matter what. Of course some of these things were a bit far fetched but isn't that what a good book should be? There were definitely some dramatic turns of events!

There was not one thing I would change about this book. While, thankfully, I have never known anyone who was murdered I felt that the author did an amazing job of portraying the possible after effects of such a tragedy. Jasmine's panic attacks, the mother's fears and actions and poor sweet little Lily's worries all seemed to fit perfectly with the situation. The relationship between Lily and her younger brother was absolutely adorable as well. I felt that all the characters were realistic and well developed. I honestly loved Jasmine, she was only a teenager but she was strong, brave and able to do what needed to be done no matter what she personally felt. I can't say enough good things about this novel, just go read it!

5 Stars

Shimmer is the second book in the Breathe series by Elena Dillon and while it can be read as a stand alone I recommend reading Breathe first. Breathe is an amazing book and it will help you understand Caeden a little bit better because of what his family went through in the first book. Anyway, Shimmer is an another perfect blend of young romance and suspense. Chandler and her father have been on the run for four years after she witnessed her mother's murder. They never stay in one place for more than a few months so making friend, dating and doing anything to call attention to herself is out of the question. When they arrive in Lafayette everything changes though, Chandler is an experienced and talented tumbler who is talked into trying out for the cheerleading squad where she becomes instant best friends with Lily and Abby. The she does what a typical teen might do, she forges her dads signature and sneaks around to cheer, compete and be with her new friends. I loved that about this book. while Chandler is mature in some ways after being on the run for long she is still a teenage girl who rebels against her dad in order to try and have a normal life, even if its only for a little bit.

Chandler is an amazing young woman, she has been through a horrible tragedy and her life is anything but normal but she keeps moving forward and making the best of things. She does take unnecessary risks to cheer but can you blame her? She just wanted a little piece of a normal life especially when things start moving in a romantic direction with Caeden. I think the author did a brilliant job in creating Chandler's character, she was the perfect combination of normal teenager with the skittish behavior of someone who is running for her life. Because of her youth she didn't realize the full repercussions of all of her actions and the dangerous situations she was creating for people she cared about. There are a few situations in this book where I was amazed at the bravery and strength of this remarkable young girl. Watching her relationship develop with Caeden was amazing, I adored him in Breathe when he was a young boy. In Shimmer he's older and has grown into a gorgeous, over protective, suspicious but wonderful young man. After everything he went through in his young life it was no wonder he was so suspicious of everyone but once he opened up he was so amazing. His raw honesty about how he felt as a young boy unable to help his sisters broke my heart and helped me to understand the young man he had grown into. I loved the two of them together and how tentatively they approached their relationship since they had each been through so much in their short lives. There isn't much I can say about the suspense portion of this novel without giving away key information but WOW was it amazing! There were some twists I never saw coming and it was quite a wild ride.

I loved everything about this book, it was the perfect amount of romance and suspense and kept me hooked from the very page. Elena Dillon has an incredible talent for creating realistic, lovable character whose emotions and actions fit their unusual situations perfectly and her plots keep the reader completely captivated. The last few chapters of this book had tears streaming down my face with the raw emotion of Caeden and Chandler and what they went through. I adored this book and the characters and I sincerely hope that Lily and Finn star in the next one!!

“Did you miss me, Arianna?”

I can’t talk so I nod against his neck. One hand glides down my leg and into the hem of my shorts. His finger grazes the edge of the silk of my underwear. He moves the silk to the side and rubs his fingers between my swollen lips. He teases me with his touch until I moan.

“Say it. Say you missed me and I’ll take care of you.”
Smug bastard.

Shaking my head, not giving him the satisfaction. He removes his fingers but uses his whole hand to cup my sex and squeezes. I cry out and then bury my mouth on his shoulder trying to smother the sounds I can’t stop from making. My body begs for the pleasure but my mind won’t give in.

“I feel you trembling. I know exactly what you need. All you have to do is say three little words. ‘I missed you’.”
I try to wiggle away, but his body and one arm has me pinned against the wall. I swivel my hips against his hand trying to get enough contact to relieve myself, but he twists his wrist and squeezes again. The need for release seeps all the way down to my toes. Then I think of something that may get to him.

“Reed?” I whisper.

“Hmmm?”
“If you don’t want to take care of me, I’ve got a very talented BOB in my room that’ll do it. The thought of it actually excites me.”
His body stiffens and his eyes meet mine shining with desire.

“Not fucking happening.”

Melissa's Review...

4 Stars

Trust me was a really great stand alone story with a HEA.  It was written from alternating POV's between Avery and Maddox so you always knew exactly what the main characters were thinking.  I truly enjoyed this story and thought that Lacey's writing style flowed really well.

Lacey spent years pining over her older brother, Jake's best friend, Maddox.  But she knew he was unattainable.  She spent all of her time as a single mother, raising her young daughter, Brooklyn, after being betrayed by her first love.  He guarded her heart and had major trust issues.

Maddox was the town player.  He knew he didn't want to settle down and he made that abundantly clear to every woman he took to bed.  But he couldn't shake the feelings he had for one girl.  But that girl was strictly off limits because she was the sister of his best friend.  But what happens when they stop denying the feelings they have for each other?  Would Lacey be able to get over her trust issues and let Maddox in and would he be able to hang up his player hat and settle down?  And how exactly would Jake handle the news?

I really did love the strong family bond in this book!  Avery's family got together every Sunday for family dinner and when one was in trouble, they all put their lives on hold to be there for each other.  Her brothers were so cute, in that overprotective brotherly way and her parents were just amazing.  As far as Maddox and Avery's relationship goes, I know people who wish for that kind of connection.  Their sparks were flying from the beginning of the story.  I cheered for them and cried my eyes out at their HEA.

I was so happy that Lacey didn't add any unnecessary drama to this book.  Avery and Maddox's love was breath of fresh air and while there was a bit of secrecy that surrounded it, there by no means was anything dark.  The book was a great read and I did thoroughly enjoy it!  Kudos, Lacey!! I can not wait for Jake's story!!

Excerpt...

Maddox
I drive home in comfortable silence. I don’t think I’ve ever been content with comfortable silence with a woman before which is just another reminder of how Avery is different from everyone else. She doesn’t feel the need to talk all the time for the sake of talking.
As we start to approach the city limits of Rivers Edge, I start to wonder what I should do next. If this was any other girl, I’d drive back to her house with no hesitation whatsoever and take her inside. But this is Avery, and like I said, she’s different.
So, I thought maybe we’d stop by my house for a bit if that’s okay with you. This way, someone like Jake doesn’t see my truck parked in your drive and make trouble.” Even to my own ears, I sounded a little nervous as I said it. What the hell? It’s not like it’s my first time taking a girl home. Then it hits me. It is the first time I’m taking a girl home; to my house. I always go to their place. But the thought of Avery in my house, my bed, just feels right.
That sounds good,” she says with another shy smile. I love that smile; it’s filled with happiness and innocence. I turn off Main Street and head down Lincoln towards my house. When I reach my house, I pull into the drive and kill the engine. I hop out and walk around to her door. When I open it, she seems slightly hesitant, maybe even nervous.
I can take you home if you want.”
No,” she quickly throws out there. “I want to be here…with you.” There’s that damn smile again. I extend my hand to her and help her down from the truck and head inside.
When we step inside the dark recesses of my living room, I start to walk towards the lamp but she catches me by the arm, stopping me. I turn to look at her. The only light in the room is what moonlight is filtering through the window. Standing there in my darkened living room, light glowing off her blond hair, she looks stunning. She extends her hand up to cradle my cheek, her other hand runs up my abdomen from my stomach to rest on my chest. I step closer to her, looking deep into her eyes. She must have realized she was holding her breath because she lets out a big breath which comes out a little shaky. I look deep into her crystal blue eyes, and that’s when I see it. Lust. Desire. Trust.
My resolve shatters like a glass vase with that one look as I push her back against my front door. Our lips are urging each other on as our desire for each other completely takes over. She runs her tongue down my neck, and I almost come completely undone in my pants like a teenage boy by that one simple move. I cradle her ass in my hands and lift her up. She threads her legs around my waist, her hands diving into my hair. I lean against her, pushing her back into the door, and she moans. It’s the sexiest fucking sound I’ve ever heard and all I can think about is being deep inside her, making her moan over and over and over again.
I press hot kisses along her chin, down her delectable neck and lick the spot where her pulse is rapidly beating. “Tell me to stop, Avery. Tell me to stop right now and I will. But if you say nothing, I’m taking you back to my room and burying myself deep inside you. I’m going to make you come and scream my name. All. Night. Long. Tell me you want this as much as I do.”
I want this,” she whispers without hesitation and that’s all I need to hear.

LAST Empathy DividerSynopsis
Blake:

I am a brother
I am a police detective
I am a contract killer
I don’t want to love
I don’t want to feel
I don’t want … EMPATHY.

They say some people are born with decreased activity in the front central lobe causing them a deficiency in empathy. Maybe that’s true about me but whether I was born this way or created in a moment of evil, empathy was something I didn’t possess until her green eyes met mine in the mirror and I couldn’t take her life.
I didn’t want to feel, didn’t want this woman in my life complicating how I lived but she was there at every turn. Sent to haunt me for my sins. Her light so bright she provoked a shadow from everyone she touched. When a job turns bad quickly altering my life forever I’m forced to feel. When nothing is making sense I’m forced to face truths I never would recover from. When life drowns you in its cruelty you don’t know which way the current will drag you or who you’ll become once you re-surface.

Melody:
I was a daughter
I was a student
I was a victim
Did I have his love?
Did I make him feel?
Did I have his empathy?
When the actions of a soulless killer forces sorrow into my veins I never dreamed the man healing my wounds would be the one to leave the worst scar. His love would scar my soul. Scars are permanent; I will never feel the relief from them. Will I learn to live with them, remember why I have them and learn never to let him close enough to inflict more? Will I eventually cover them… like tattoos coating them with new memories, new love and new starts? I didn’t know these answers because the pain was too suffocating, the only thing I knew was they will always be under the surface lingering. He had scars too, from his sins. There is nothing that can cover them, they were too deep, too ugly, too dark and they marked us both forever.

5 Stars

Empathy by Ker Dukey is an insane ride, I thought I had things figured out, I thought I knew where this book would go and then she slammed me with a couple of twists that I NEVER saw coming. From the moment I read the synopsis I knew I would enjoy this story. I'm not sure how I'd even classify this book, its a romance but it is also suspenseful, mysterious and a bit of a thriller, I loved every second of it! The plot is well developed, complex, intriguing and spell binding, Ker had me hooked and didn't let me go for even a moment from the first page to the last.

One feature I found unique and very interesting is there were three main characters and we got all three points of view which made the book even better in my opinion! Melody is the main love interest, she is a college student who walked into her family home one night to find her parents brutally murdered. She was attacked but the killer couldn't bring himself to end her life and it started a chain of events that changed three people's lives forever. The author described the night she found her parent's bodies so clearly that I felt the depths of the pain she must have experienced. The descriptions of the aftermath of such a tragedy were gripping and brought the grief and destruction to life on the page. Melody was so strong though, even though she was breaking she kept trying to live normally and face each day the best she could. Blake, a contract killer who is also a police officer is a walking contradiction, In spite of his obvious psychopathic tendencies Melody awakens something in him, she makes him feel things. Even though I hated Blake watching their relationship develop was captivating and heart warming. The reasons he become a killer and developed a heart of ice were actually sort of understandable, I know that sounds crazy but you'll see what I mean, he turned his feelings off but she brought light back into his dark soul. The way he related to her was amazing, he was like a little kid in some ways since he'd never had a real relationship before, it was endearing. About halfway through the book I found myself really hoping that Melody would never find out who he was so they could just live happily ever after, sometimes ignorance is bliss. Ryan, Blake's younger brother, is a friend of Melody's and he is quite a confusing character. He's obviously damaged by the events of his childhood and he mostly keeps to himself, in fact Melody is one of his first friends, something about her just brings out people's emotions. These three characters must maintain a delicate balance as they relate to each other, there are so many secrets that could just blow everything up in their faces.

I enjoyed the entire book but the last 25% or so was just absolutely mind blowing, complete insanity. Several times I found myself muttering "are you serious, did that really just happen?", yes I was an actual crazy person talking to myself! Then the epilogue just finished me off, I think I just started blankly at my kindle for awhile in absolute shock. What a twist! Ker Dukey really knows how to craft one hell of a story that will leave the reader unable to form a coherent thought for awhile after they finish!

This was my first book by Ker but it won't be my last!

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters. I wanted to be an actress growing up so I could live many roles but I learned early on that my mind was too active... I would want to change the script.I would watch films and think of ways they could of improved the story if they took another direction so i thought it best that i tell my own.

My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light, some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.

When I'm not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I'm a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.
